Abstract

959,238. Fluid-pressure brakes. M. B. WILD & CO. Ltd. April 18, 1963 [April 18, 1962], No. 14989/62. Headings F2E and F2F. The shoes 24, 25 of a brake for mine winding gear are operated by a double-acting pistoncylinder unit 4, 5, being urged in the engaging direction by liquid supplied at a constant high pressure from a pump 7 through a pipe-line 14 to the small-area side of the piston, and urged in the direction for release by liquid supplied by a second pump 9 through a pipe-line 18 to the opposite side of the piston, the pressure of this liquid being regulated by a valve 22 operated by a manual control lever 10. The pipeline 14 is provided with a relief valve 11 and an air vessel accelerator 13, while pipe-line 18 has an emergency valve 19 operated, for example, by a solenoid 20. In addition, pipe-line 14 communicates with a cylinder 42 housing a piston 41 normally holding a weight 34 in a raised position, but in the event of pressure failure the weight falls to apply the brake through a linkage 35, 39 which includes a pin- and-slot connection 36, 37 permitting normal operation. The pivoted ends 27 of the shoes may be fixed or adjustable, or connected by a compensating linkage as described in Specification 959,118.
