Abstract

782,023. Winding machinery brakes. BLACK, G. A. Nov. 21, 1955 [Nov. 29, 1954], No 34488/54. Class 103 (1). In a brake system for colliery and other like winding engine control gear, particularly for the Koepe-type winder, wherein the brake shoes are operable by spring means and released by fluid pressure, means such as the pre-set relief valves V3, V4, V5 and V6 are arranged to automatically prevent the pressure in the brake cylinder C from falling below a predetermined value on actuation of an emergency trip mechanism TS associated with a by-pass valve VI. In normal operation, the pressure produced by pumps P1, P2 acts directly on the brake cylinder C and is varied by pressure produced by the hand or foot operated pressure relief valve V2 acting through ports a and b of the trip valve V1. When the emergency trip mechanism TS is operated, ports a and c of the valve V are connected so the pump pressure is passed back to the reservoir RT but pressure is maintained in the cylinder C in accordance with whichever one of relief valves V3 to V6 is selected by the solenoid-operated pilot valves V3a to V6a to obtain a chosen pressure according as to whether the equipment is operating for personnel or coal, or ascending or descending. In another embodiment, Fig. 3, a direction valve DV operated mechanically from a friction assisted change-over unit FAC automatically selects valves V3, V5 or V4, V6, the effect of the valve V2 being applied on the brake cylinder side of the valve DV through a non-return valve NRV. In yet another embodiment, the invention is modified to apply to winders of the loose and clutched drum type.
