Abstract

958,964. Xerographic masters. RANKXEROX Ltd. June 16,1960 [June 23, 1959], No. 21144/60. Drawings to Specification. Heading G2H. A xerographic master plate capable of being raised to a uniform potential and then showing a charge distribution in an image pattern is constructed using an electrical resistivity or a capacity differential. In one embodiment an insulating material pattern is formed on a support, having a resistivity less than that of the pattern but greater than 10<SP>10</SP> ohm-cms, which may have a conductive backing. The said material may be polystyrene or rosin-modified phenol-formaldehyde and the supporting layer may be an epoxy resin or bleached shellac, and the thickness of the layer may be in the range 0. 001-0. 005 inch. In another embodiment using a capacity differential, a raised material pattern is formed on a conductor plate e.g. a cast type slug with a sheet of an insulating material e.g. polyethylene terephthalate placed across the pattern. The gaps between this sheet and the unraised portions of the plate may be filled with a solid dielectric of low capacity, e.g., an epoxy resin. The master may also be formed by etching the copper of a copper clad epoxy-filled glass sheet and placing the etched surface in a electrically grounded base. A similar embodiment comprises a conductive material pattern formed on an insulator on a conductive base with an insulator covering the material pattern and contacting the other insulator in the gaps in the pattern. The first mentioned embodiments are charged by subjecting them to a corona device but for charging the latter embodiment a potential is applied to the material pattern directly; the corona device is also used.
