The capstan/flywheel assembly of a tape recorder has a two-step capstan portion whose diameters 14, 15 may be selectively offered to drive the tape 9a in conjunction with a pinch roller 13 to drive the tape at two speeds. A belt 8 drives the reel-carriers and the flywheel 17 at a constant speed and a lever/bell-crank means 30, 28 acting on a thrust ball 19 raises or lowers the capstan assembly. The pinch-roller is arranged as in Specification 958,846 to snap into or out of engagement with the capstan by virtue of an overcentre spring 39 for speed-changing or to facilitate tape-loading.
