A constant frequency signal recorded on one track of a two track magnetic recording tape is compared with the output of a tunable oscillator during playback of a recording on the other track, and the difference frequency utilized to control playback speed by field control of the tape driving motor. By setting the frequency of the oscillator, playback may be at the recording speed or any multiple thereof, the latter being useful when examining variations of data recorded at low frequency during scientific experiments.
