Abstract
946, 512. Signal-controlled tape recorders. SANDERS ASSOCIATES Inc. March 27,1962, No. 11593/62. Heading G5R. A tape recorder arranged with interengaging components mounted on spool carriers 10,11, has slow forward and rapid reverse capstans 49,17 with a head 13 and pressure pad 48 between, solenoid means, activated by the input signal, rocking a member 14 to engage a pinch-roller 56, the input signal also proceeding via a delay network to the head 13, such that the tape has time to accelerate from rest before recording the signal completely from its start. The capstans 49,17 also drive spools in the carriers 10,11 by slipping belt means, the pad 48 engaging the tape sufficiently to prevent tape drift during 'standby' when pinchrollers 54, 56 are disengaged. The capstan 17 may provide either fast rewind or fast playback. To assist tape acceleration, the tape is led over sprung rollers 39, 41, mounted on a carriage 42 sliding in a housing 12. For battery economy, the 'start' solenoid is double-wound, comprising low impedance 'activate' and high impedance 'hold' windings.
