Abstract

957,820. Welding by pressure; welding by fusion. BRITISH OXYGEN CO. Ltd. May 30, 1962 [June 1, 1961], No. 20813/62. Heading B3R. In a spot welding machine comprising a welding electrode and a return current electrode located on the same side of a workpiece, one of the electrodes is carried by a support mounted for rotation about an axis perpendicular to the workpiece, the electrode is spaced from the axis to contact alternative points of the workpiece and the other electrode is mounted on the same support or on the axis extending through the support. For welding brackets &c. to a metal sheet coated with insulating plastic a welding machine comprises a pneumatic cylinder 14 moving a piston 13 with a hollow piston rod in which is arranged a spring pressed rod 19 carrying a spot welding electrode 12. A cylindrical casing 21 is carried on the end of the piston rod and houses an annular bearing ring 23 formed with a return current electrode 25. Current is supplied to the electrodes by conductors 26, 27. In a modification a spot welding electrode is supported at one end of an arm pivoted for rotation in a horizontal plane about a piston rod and a spring pressed return electrode is mounted at the other end of the arm at the same distance from the pivot. The welding electrodes may be for resistance welding or gas shielded arc spot welding with consumable or non-consumable electrodes and may be water cooled. Magnetic force means may be provided for resistance welding to apply forging pressure. The apparatus may be suspended from overhead rail tracks. In spot welding a top hat metal section 43, Fig. 3, to a metal sheet 44 a welding electrode 41 and return electrode 42 are mounted on an arm 39 pivoted to a piston rod 40 at unequal distances from the pivot point. The piston rod is arranged in line with the axis of the top hat and the apparatus lowered to effect a weld on the right hand flange 45. The apparatus is raised, the arm 39 rotated and a second weld is made on the left hand flange.
