805,677. Welding by fusion. PHILIPS ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Jan. 3, 1957 [Jan. 6, 1956], No. 306/57. Class 83 (4). Arc welding apparatus comprises a consumable metal disc electrode 1 bearing upon and . rotated by a roller 3 of electrically non-conductive material which runs on the workpiece 2. The roller 3 constitutes one of the wheels of a carriage 7 traversed by a motor 9 and supporting a pivoted arm in which is journalled the electrode 1. The faces of the electrode may be flux coated. In a modification, shielding gas pipes 11 ... 14 are directed towards the welding zone and gas may be directed through two pipes only or through all the pipes at various pressures to control and direct the arc. Carbon dioxide, helium or argon may be used. The Specification also refers to a known process in which a disc electrode has a thick coating, the periphery of which rests on the work and spaces the metal of the disc from the work.
