Abstract
1,064,407. Welding by fusion. ROLLSROYCE Ltd. Jan. 29, 1966, No. 4074/66. Heading B3R. In a rotary welding machine, e.g. for butt welding pipes 15, 16, in which a gas-shielded arc welding head 54 is carried by a rotatable table 32, welding current and shielding gas are supplied to the table 32 and thence the head 54, a work-holder 42 secures the work coaxially of the table 32, and the head 54 is resiliently urged towards the work to bring an adjustable projection 75 on the head 54 into contact with the work. The head 54 is radially slidably mounted on a block 52 which is adjustable vertically by rotation of a threaded rod 55. A spring 88 is interposed between the block 52 and the head 54. Argon and current are supplied to the head 54 from an annular groove 33 and a ring 34 in the table 32 which is rotatable on a fixed insulating plate 18 having a gas duct 24 and a current brush 29. A work clamp 45 is mounted in roller bearings 40 in the table 32 which is rotated by a belt 38. The clamp 45 which has a collet 49 has a skirt 47 in non-rotatable engagement with the base 12 of the machine. The collet 49 holds a pipe 15 or a holder on which a pipe fitting may be mounted. In either case the other workpiece in the form of a pipe 16 is separately supported. Argon is fed to the interior of the work.
