Abstract
1469318 Welding by fusion FOSTER WHEELER POWER PRODUCTS Ltd 19 Sept 1975 [19 June 1974] 27276/74 Heading B3R A rotary, gas-shielded, non-consumable electrode, arc welding torch, for effecting a circumferential seal weld between a replacement valve seat 12 and a chest of a slide valve (10, Fig. 1, not shown), comprises a support 28 clampable within a valve bore 18, a further support 30 slidably splined, and lockable as by screws (not shown), on the support 28, and an annular holder 32 rotatable on the further support 30, by way of a worm and wheel 92, 90, and carrying a non-consumable electrode 34, e.g. tungsten, within a ceramic gas nozzle 70. The splined connection between the supports 28, 30 allows telescoping thereof, for introduction into the valve after removal of its slide, and fine positioning of the electrode/workpiece distance following rough positioning and clamping of the support 28 in the valve bore. Clamping of the support 28 is by garter-spring-returned shoes 50 radially outwardly cammed into contact with the bore 18 by energization of an hydraulic piston 48. The electrode is energized via a brush 94 carried by the support 30 and bearing against the holder 32 which is conductive. Inert shielding gas and electrode cooling water are circulated via ducts and grooves in the support 30 and mating conduits in the holder 32, sealing 0-rings being provided in the bore of the latter.
