Abstract

797,139. Welding by fusion. BRITISH OXYGEN CO., Ltd. July 20, 1956 [July 29, 1955], No. 22003/55. Class 83 (4). In a welding jig for holding work during electric arc welding thereof along a circular path two circular clamps make intimate contact with the work in proximity to the path over areas symmetrically disposed about the path, the clamps being of good thermal and electrical conducting material and of large cross-section to provide a heat sink and symmetrical paths for welding current. The clamps comprise annular metal rings 12, 13 supported on arms 17 attached to discs 18, 118, the disc 118 being mounted on a shaft 27 rotatable by a motor and the disc 18 being welded to a sleeve 37 rotatable on a shaft 33 movable axially by a wheel 34 in a tail-stock 32. Slip-rings 19, 23 on the discs make contact with brushes 20, 24 in pillars 21, 25 and straps 26 connected to one side of the supply connect the pillars 21, 25. Two hemispherical shells 10, 11 are assembled edge-to-edge in the clamps and sleeves 31, 40 are adjusted so that pads 30, 41 carried thereby exert pressure on the shells and with argon supplied from a pipe 44 to flow through the interior of the shells, the shells are rotated beneath the nozzle 14 of an argon shielded tungsten electrode connected to the other side of the supply. According to the Provisional Specification a filler rod may be used with an argon-shielded non-consuming electrode, gas welding may be used and the axial pressure may be exerted by hydraulic or pneumatic means.
