Abstract

A ceramic nozzle having a central passageway 2 for carrying a non- consumable electrode comprises two groups of inert gas (e.g. argon) passages. The passages of the first group surround and are parallel with respect to the electrode to provide the main supply of gas for blanketing the weld but the passages of the second group diverge to provide an enlarged gas atmosphere which prevents porosity in the weld seam due to oxidation during cooling. As shown, the two groups are concentric with the electrode, the divergent second group passages 4b branching from the first group passages 4a. In a further embodiment, the second group follows the first group along the weld line. Circumferential arc welding of tubes end-to-end, with internal gas purging of the tubes, is disclosed. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Electric welding apparatus This invention relates to electric welding apparatus.
One electric welding process, used for example to join abutting components together, comprises striking an electric arc between a non-consumable electrode and the components at the abutment so that the compounds are fused together. The process is usually carried out under a blanket of inert gas to prevent oxidation of the fused material and consequently inclusions in the weld. One typical example of electric welding equipment is the orbital welding apparatus used for butt joining tubes, the apparatus comprising a clamp for embracing one of the tubes and carrying a tubular gas distributing nozzle adjacent to the electrode. Inert gas (argon for example) is directed by the nozzle to the vicinity of the tip of the electrode. In use of the apparatus the tube ends to be joined are abutted, the tip of the electrode is then positioned adjacent the abutment and after striking an arc between the electrode and tube assembly the clamp is rotated about the supporting tube progres lively to effect a circumferential weld at the abutment. Some difficulty has been experienced with apparatus of this kind, in that the welds have been found to be porous, believed to be caused by oxidation during the cooling (solidifying) stage and it is an object of the invention to provide orbital welding apparatus which ameliorates this difficulty.
According to the invention, orbital electric welding apparatus includes a gas distributing nozzle adapted by a central passageway for carrying a nonconsumable electrode on its longitudinal axis and a plurality of passageways for conducting inert gas through the nozzle, the passageways comprising a first series disposed parallel to the longitudinal axis of the nozzle and a second series which are radially outwardly divergent of the longitudinal axis. During a welding operation the first series of passageways directs a major fraction of inert gas flow along the non-consumable electrode to the tip thereof, whilst the second series of passageways distributes a minorfraction over the surrounding area thereby maintaining a blanket of inert gas over the weld during the progressive solidification of the fused material.
In a preferred construction of orbital electric welding apparatus the gas conducting passageways of the nozzle comprise inner and outer annular series disposed concentrically with the central passageway, each passageway of the outer series being branched from a passageway of the inner series.
A construction of orbital electric welding apparatus embodying the invention is described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings of which: Figure 1 is a sectional view of a gas distributing nozzle, and Figure 2 is a plan view.
The gas distributing nozzle illustrated in the drawings is of ceramic and has a screw thread 1 for engagement with a complementary gas connecting socket 1 a of the apparatus. The nozzle has a central passageway 2 for carrying a non-consumable electrode 3 (shown in broken line) on its longitudinal axis and a plurality of passageways 4 for conducting inert gas, which may be argon, through the nozzle. The passageways 4 are arranged in a first series 4a disposed parallel to the longitudinal axis of the nozzle and the second series 4b, which are radially outwardly divergent of the longitudinal axis. The first and second series of passageways are arranged as inner and outer annular series concentric with the central passageway and each passageway of the outer series is branched from a passageway of the inner series. The apparatus, intended for butt welding the ends of a pair of tubes, comprises an arcuate frame (not shown in the drawings) carrying a pair of metal shoes for rotatably clamping the frame to one of the tubes. The frame carries the gas distributing nozzle in a complementary gas connecting socket la and is mounted on a tube so that a non-consumable electrode carried by the nozzle is directed radially towards the tube with an arc striking gap between the tip of the electrode and the tube. In use, a second tube is end abutted with the apparatus carrying tube and the tip of the electrode is positioned in register with the abutment. Inert gas, such as argon, is flowed through the nozzle to impinge at the abutment and the tube bores are purged with a second flow of inert gas.An electric arc is struck between the electrode and the tubes and the apparatus is rotated progressively to weld the abutment. A major flow of gas through the passageways 4a provides an inert atmosphere about the electric arc and a minor flow of gas through the passageways 4b extends the inert atmosphere radially so that the newly welded seam immediately following the tip of the electrode is shielded from oxygen until the fused material has solidified.
In an envisaged alternative construction of orbital electric welding apparatus the first and second series of passageways are arranged in line so that in operation the second series of passageways can be arranged to follow the first series, thereby maintaining the inert gas atmosphere until the fused material of the weld has solidified.

Electric welding apparatus comprising a gas distributing nozzle adapted by a central passageway for carrying a non-consumable electrode on its longitudinal axis and a plurality of passageways for conducting inert gas through the nozzle, the passageways comprising a first series disposed parallel to the longitudinal axis of the nozzle and a second series which are radially outwardly divergent of the longitudinal axis.
2. Electric welding apparatus according to claim 1 wherein the gas conducting passageways of the nozzle comprise inner and outer annular series disposed concentrically with the central passageway, each passageway of the outer series being branched from a passageway of the inner series.
