Abstract

957,803. Transistor switching circuits. PHILIPS ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. July 5, 1960 [July 8, 1959], No. 23467/60. Heading H3T. Overloading of the switching transistor 9 of a relay switching circuit due to transients developed by the relay winding 6 when the current thereto is cut off is prevented by connecting a further transistor 14 in series with the transistor 6, the base electrode of this transistor being connected through a resistor 15 to the collector-voltage supply terminal. As applied to a carrier-wave-telephony system incoming negative-going signalling pulses are applied to the base electrode of transistor 9, which is normally cut off by the bias applied to its emitter electrode, to render the transistor conducting. Transistor 14 conducts simultaneously and relay 6 is energized. At the end of the pulse transistor 9 is cut off and its collector electrode instantaneously assumes the voltage at the base of transistor 14, i.e. the value of the supply voltage while any transient produced by the winding 6 and applied to transistor 14 is effectively reduced in value by the same amount. The effect of transients is further reduced by resistor 16 and capacitor 17.
