Abstract

872,433. Protective arrangements. SIEMENS - SCHUCKERTWERKE A.G. March 12, 1959 [March 14, 1958], No. 8593/59. Class 38 (5). [Also in Group XL (c)] A b-istable circuit for use in an electric protective system comprises two transistors having their emitter and base circuits crosscoupled and having two control switches respectively connecting the base at one of the transistors to the emitter supply terminal and the collector supply terminal whereby alternate operation of the switches causes the circuit to change from one stable state to the other. In Fig. 1 two transistors 3 and 5 have their collector and emitter electrodes cross-coupled through resistors 10 and 12 respectively so that either one or the other transistor is conducting. Switches 13 and 14 are connected between base and emitter and base and collector circuits of transistor 3, the latter connection including a resistor 15 or a capacitor. Operation of switch 14 renders transistor 3 conducting and 5 non- conducting and subsequent operation of switch 13 renders transistor 3 non-conducting and transistor 5 conducting. A lamp 7 is connected in series with the collector of transistor 5 and a relay is operated by the transistor amplifier 8 connected to the collector of transistor 3. In a protective system (Fig. 2), a number of such bi-stable circuits A, B, C, &c. are connected to a common mono-stable or bi-stable output circuit D adapted to operate a horn, each bi-stable circuit A, B, C, &c. having an individual switch 13 associated with a circuit to be protected and a common switch 14 to restore the circuits to normal after operation by the individual switches. In addition, a common switch 42 may be provided in parallel with switches 13 and a further switch 38 may be provided in the horn circuit, both switches being provided to permit the operator to test the operation of the circuit. The switches 13 could be operated when excess or reverse current blows in one of the phase conductors on the direct current side of a converter installation.
