Abstract

1,067,960. Bi-stable circuits. LANDIS & GYR A.G. Dec. 18, 1964 [Dec. 20, 1963], No. 51616/64. Heading H3T. In a transistor bi-stable circuit, having feedback between an output stage 3 and an input stage 1, the control current to the input stage is amplified by a transistor pre-input stage 18, complementary to that of the input stage 1. The input stage and the pre-input stage 18 each consist of the same number of transistors which may be single transistors or composite types, as shown. With no input signal from a source connected across terminals 16, 17, the transistor pre-input stage 18 and input stage 1 are conducting and output stage 3 is biased off by battery 8. If terminal 16 is made positive with respect to 17, then the base-emitter current of the pre-input stage 18 increases and input stage 1 becomes less conductive, which raises the potential of its collector so that output stage 3 conducts. Feedback via resistor 10 further decreases the conduction of stage 1 and increases the conduction of stage 3. The circuit returns to its original state when the input voltage at 16, 17 is reduced to a certain level. The transistors may be of the junction or field effect types and at least one of the transistors in the pre-input stage 18 or the input stage 1 may be a photo-transistor. Applications of the circuit are: two-point regulator, threshold value indicator, photo-electric switching, and in fault current protective switches.
