Abstract

The invention comprises steroids of the general formula: <FORM:0957392/C2/1> wherein R represents hydrogen or methyl and R1 represents the acyl radical of an aliphatic, cycloaliphatic or aromatic acid having from 1 to 9 carbon atoms, and a process for the preparation of 16a -hydroxy-steroids by treating steroid compounds having a methylenic group at the 16-position with a culture produced by growing the microorganisms Nocardia italica or a mutant thereof in a sterilized liquid nutritional medium containing assimilable sources of carbon and nitrogen at from 24 to 30 DEG C. at a pH of from 6 to 7.5. Therapeutic compositions having anticancer activity contain as the active ingredient steroids of the above general formula and a therapeutically acceptable carrier for example, an injectable carrier, or contain as the active ingredient 16a -hydroxy-17a -methyl-19-nor-testosterone and a therapeutically acceptable injectable carrier.
