A transformer has winding space enclosed between an inner core limb and an outer cylindrical core portion and divided into two separate compartments by an electromagnetic shield, the primary winding being disposed in one compartment and the secondary winding in the other. In one arrangement (Fig. 2) the primary and secondary windings 18, 19 are separated by a brass or high permeability barrier 15 which is brazed to the inside of the outer magnetic cylinder 13 and to the central magnetic spindle 10. The transformer is mounted by tapped rings 32, 33 in a shield 46 which may contain an electro-explosive device. The magnetic members may be of laminated soft iron, mild steel or ferrite. In another arrangement (Fig. 4, not shown), the primary and secondary windings are arranged coaxially around the centre member of a pot core and are separated by a thick metal tubular shield. A further embodiment for use with D.C. incorporates a pin 150 (Fig. 5) secured to a thin high permeability diaphragm shield 115. The pin 150 is secured to a spring-urged contact arrangement 151 and is operated by flexing of diaphragm 115 to cause the primary 118 to be fed by pulsating D.C. from the D.C. supply terminals 138. The pin may slide in bearings of polytetrafluorethylene. The transformer core may be permanently magnetized.
