In a steam generating nuclear reactor, stability and flux distribution are controlled by arrangement of the volumetric ratios of moderator and coolant to fuel. The uranium fuel rods 12 are mounted within the zirconium pressure tube 11 within the aluminium tube 10 which is immersed in the moderator, heavy water. The tubes 10 are arranged on a square lattice. The parameters are selected so that the negative temperature characteristics exist in the full power operating region but that they are not large enough to cause "chugging". The positive temperature characteristics occur when the coolant is in the water phase, the temperature changes are small, and can be followed by the absorber control system.
