[Also in Division B3] A cushioning device for machine tools (see Division B3) comprises a dash-pot 25, Fig. 2, with a buffer member 23. The latter is in the form of a hollow plunger housing a return spring 32, and slidable in bushes 29, 30, in a housing 28. A collar 35 on the plunger limits the outward movement. The return spring 32 bears, at its rear end, against the head 58 of a tappet 33. Disc springs are interposed between the rear of the tappet and the casing and a stem 60 extends from the front end of the tappet to act as a buffer for the plunger if the dash-pot fails to function correctly. When the plunger 23 is forced to the right an orifice 40 in the bush 30 communicating with a reservoir 42, is cutoff and liquid is compressed in the space 61. This liquid passes along slots 65 in the tappet and from the space 68 to an outlet 69, Fig. 4 (sectional plan) and thence to an adjustable restrictor 70 and finally through passage 75 to space 44 and the reservoir via port 45, Fig. 2.
