The cylinder 2 has a large diameter cylindrical portion 12, a tapering portion 13, and a smaller diameter cylindrical portion. Liquid flows from the front of the piston 3 to the back through the diminishing gap between the piston and cylinder, as well as through a passage 9 outside the cylinder. The extent and degree of the tapering portion may be made adjustable by employing a two-part cylinder (18, 19, Fig. 2, not shown). The throttling afforded by the passage 9 is adjustable. The impact receiving head 27 is faced with resilient material. In Fig. 3 (not shown), a return spring (32) for the piston is arranged between the head (34) and the cylinder, instead of in front of the piston.
