Abstract

1386646 Shock absorbers MENASCO MFG CO 17 Oct 1972 47764/72 Heading F2S A piston-cylinder shock absorber for mounting a bumper on a vehicle (not shown) has a preloaded compressible solid 38 as the energy absorbing medium and, after assembly of the shock absorber, the open end of the cylinder 12 is plastically deformed into engagement with a collar 26 which serves as a piston-rod guide. Serrations 28 in the collar 26 facilitate engagement with the cylinder 12. An annular recess 40 in the piston ensures that on impact the medium under pressure forces the forward edge of the piston against the cylinder thus preventing flow of medium round the piston and restricting the flow to the apertures 36. These apertures may, however, be replaced by peripheral cutouts in the piston to give a designed flow round the piston.
