Abstract
1428767 Vehicle bumpers J BAYA PENA 26 Feb 1973 [26 Feb 1972] 9360/73 Heading B7J [Also in Division F2] A vehicle-mounted bumper assembly comprises a bumper 1 supported by at least two telescopic bumper supports, each including a piston-and-cylinder shock absorber 2 of which the piston-rod 3 is movable outwardly so as to space the bumper 1 from the vehicle prior to a collision, and movable inwardly upon impact against the action of fluid within the shock absorber so that pressure builds up therein to open one or more exhaust valves 5<SP>1</SP> axially spaced along the cylinder and each operable at a predetermined pressure, Outward movement of the rod 3 may be effected by fluid pressure actuated by driver operation of an electromagnet 18 operating an inlet valve 5. Such outward movement is limited by a plate 11 closing the shock absorber cylinder, and the rod 3 may be retracted (on re-opening of the valve 5 as an exhaust outlet) by mechanical means such as return springs (not shown) when no collision occurs. The piston-rod 3 is joined to the bumper 1 at a lost motion connection such that movement of the bumper towards the rod 3 opens a bleed valve 14 to release fluid from the hollow interior of the rod.
