[Also in Division G2] A film-processing apparatus may be arranged to carry out either of two separate processes, having certain common stages, by a device comprising slide bars 15 mounted on carrier bars 12, both pairs of bars 12, 15 being movable vertically simultaneously and each slide bar 15 being movable horizontally with respect to its carrier bar 12 so that a support 21 on the slide bar 15 moves progressively round a predetermined closed path having horizontallyspaced vertical portions. Photographic films 42 on suspension elements 41 are conveyed through tanks of various solutions on conveyers 43, 44, and may be lifted over a dividing wall into the next tank by the elements 41 being picked up by supports 20 attached to the carrier bars 12. Each carrier bar 12 is attached at each end to synchronized endless chains 5, 6 to provide the required path. Such a path may be as shown in Fig. 7 from tank 55 to tank 56. Each slide bar 15 is attached at 18 to an endless chain 11 driven so that points 13, 14, 18 all rise and fall synchronously. When the carrier bars 12 reach their highest or lowest positions the drive to chains 5, 6 is switched-off so that the slide bars 15 may move horizontally under the action of chain 11, the effect being to carry a support 21 mounted on the slide bar 15 over a closed path similar to that of chain 11. As shown in Fig. 7, such a path enables films being processed to miss a tank by jumping, e.g. from tank 56 over tank 57A into tank 57B. The horizontal motion of slide bars 15 may be generated by a lever linkage (Fig. 5, not shown), or by a reversible electric motor or pneumatic cylinder, instead of by chain 11. The horizontal motion of supports 21 on the slide bars 15 may be limited by stops 22, 22<SP>1</SP>, one of which may be adjustable, in conjunction with a telescoping end (Fig. 6, not shown), for the slide bar 15.
