Abstract

956,328. Laminates. DRAYTON RESEARCH Ltd. Jan. 9, 1963 [May 8, 1962], No. 19332/62. Heading B5N. A reinforcing layer, e.g. of glass-fibre reinforced polyester resin, is bonded to a layer of unplasticized polyvinyl chloride by applying to the latter layer a thixotropic paste containing a solvent such as tetrahydrofuran, ethylene dichloride, methylene chloride or cyclohexanone capable of readily breaking its surface, applying the reinforced layer before the solvent has completely evaporated, and curing the resin. The thixotropic agent in the paste may be a complex of bentonite with a quaternary ammonium compound, or finely divided silica. The polyester resin used may be a condensate of propylene glycol and maleic or maleic and isophthalic acid containing 35% of styrene, and the resin and glass fibre may be applied in alternate layers.
