956,156. Ultrasonic intensity measurements. G. A. D. GORDON. July 20, 1962 [July 20, 1961], No. 26432/61. Heading H4D. The deflection of a water-immersed beam 1 resulting from the absorption of ultrasonic energy from source 8 by a disc 4 is utilized as a measure of the intensity of such energy, the beam being previously calibrated by placing known weights on a similar disc 4a or by the provision of a sliding weight on the right-hand side of the arm which is then suitably graduated. The deflection of the beam is observed by a telescopic sight 9 provided with an internal scale. To prevent the reading of the balance from being affected by convection currents caused by the ultrasonic energy the latter is directed on to disc 4 via a thin film 10 supported by a shelf 11 which is tilted with respect to the horizontal to allow air bubbles to escape to the surface. The variation in intensity of the ultrasonic beam over its whole area may be measured by means of a movable sheet of absorbent material placed over the film 11, the sheet being provided with a small aperture to allow energy from selected areas of the beam's cross-section to pass to the disc 4.
