956,106. Filters. FRAM CORPORATION. Sept. 28, 1962 [Dec. 4, 1961], No. 36913/62. Heading BID. A cup-shaped porous filter 13 is removably insertable in the neck 11 of a fuel tank 10, has an outwardly extending annular flange 16 at its open end, and yielding spacing means disposed at the under face of the flange to hold it slightly above the neck 11 of the tank, providing an air vent while the tank is being filled, but compressible under the clamping pressure of the cap so that a seal is formed between the top of the neck and the cap when the cap is screwed home. Thus dirt entering through the air vent in the cap (not shown) is retained in the filter. Preferably, the annular flange is itself formed of compressible material, e.g. fuel resistant rubber or other plastic material to constitute a sealing gasket, and the filter cup may be moulded of porous paper or porous plastic material or may be a fine wire screen. As shown, Figs. 3, 4, compressible lugs 17 constitute the yielding spacing means. Alternatively, Figs. 6, 7, the filter 131 has a flange 15 with a flat underside, and an annular corrugated metal washer 20, interposed between the flange and the neck of the fuel tank, constitutes the yielding spacing means.
