Abstract

955,747. Coating apparatus. ALBEMARLE PAPER MANUFACTURING CO. Oct. 26, 1961 [Dec.20, 1960], No. 38310/61. Headings D1L and D2A. Apparatus for casting a wet coating on a paper comprises a rotatable casting drum having a smooth polished surface with means to heat it, means for conveying said wet coating on the paper into contact with the surface of the drum over an arcuate casting zone thereof, backing means which will be in contact with the paper on the opposite side to the coated side and which will receive vapour from the coating, a pressure member which will be disposed against the backing means at the casting zone so as to be wrapped partly around the drum surface and which is adapted to apply pressure uniformly to the backing means to a degree in excess of the vapour pressure of the boiling liquid minus the pressure loss due to passage through the coating and the paper until the cohesive strength of the coating will resist any distortion due to further drying. In the apparatus shown, to provide paper P with a smooth surface it is first coated in any conventional manner with an adhesive or mineraladhesive containing aqueous coating C and is then conveyed by roller 12 to the nip of a heated drying drum 14 at a temperature of the order 275-325‹F. The drum 14 has a highly polished chromium coated surface. Wrapped around the roller 12 is a vapour receiving backing layer in the form of a continuous felt belt 16. The belt 16 is guided around a dryer drum 18 and is pressed against the drum 14 by a flexible pressure belt 24, a tensing roller 20 and a pressure roller 26 being provided as shown. The pressure belt 24 may be omitted if the belt 16 is of a sufficiently strong construction. It is also possible to omit the use of belt 16 in cases where a low weight coating is placed on a porous bulky low density paper board, the paper board then acting as the vapour receiving backing layer. Instead of using the pressure belt 24, a soft rubber roller may be used. The roller must be soft enough to cover a substantial area of the dryer drum and in one embodiment is inflated with air. In the mineral-adhesive coating the mineral may be calcium carbonate, clay &c. and the adhesive may be a protein, starch or a starch derivative, such as acetylated, oxidised, chlorinated, ensyme converted corn or potato starch, rubber or acrylic latex and polyvinyl alcohol thermosetting plastics &c. U.S.A. Specification 1,719,166 is referred to.
