Int. Cl. B21b 31/08; B41n 7/00 U.S. Cl. 29--132 2 Claims ABSTRACT F THE DISCLOSURE A profiled gum applicator used to apply sections of latex to envelopes, bags and other articles, consists of a plate of soft polyvinyl chloride having raised portions upon one side. A wax cloth or other suitable cloth covers the other side. The applicator is affixed to a cylinder of a gumming machine, rollers being provided to transfer an adhesive from a trough to the raised portions of the applicator, while articles are conveyed past the cylinder in adhesive transferring contact with the applicator. It the applicator is to be affixed to the cylinder by glue, a wax cloth is used to carry the plate. Otherwise a pair of clamps may be used for holding the ends of a cloth upon the cylinder. If the shaft of the cylinder is open on one side, the ends of the cloth can be joined to form a sleeve which can be slid over the cylinder and secured thereto by a clamp.
This invention relates to applicators used to apply adhesives, such as strips of latex to envelopes, fiat bags, cards and the like.
The present application is a continuation-in-part of our co-pending patent application Ser. No. 584,764, filed Oct. 6, 1966, now Pat. No. 3,417,694.
Specifically, the present invention is concerned with profiled gum applicators mounted on cylinders and having raised portions applying to the articles latex which they receive from a roller in the form of a layer of predetermined thickness. Among the many uses of such applicators is one wherein two suitably located strips of latex are applied to produce a so-called self-sealing envelope or bag.
An object of the present invention is the provision of a profiled gum applicator capable of applying latex of simple and most effective construction."`
Another object is the provision of means suitably and effectively supporting the gum applicator so as to adapt it to high speed modern machines.
Other objects of the present invention wil become apparent in the course of the following specification.
In the accomplishment of the objectives of the present invention it was found desirable to make the gum applicator of an elastic and thermoplastic material, since natural and synthetic rubber cannot be used for the application of latex. The material which was found to be most suitable is soft polyvinyl chloride having a hardness of about 20-25 Shore to which drying latex does not adhere.
As is described in greater detail in the above-mentioned patent, the applicator is produced by initially shaping a thin strip of sheet metal in conformity with the desired shape of the applicator and its raised portions. Then this strip is used in a heated vulcanizing press to produce in a pattern mat a mold or matrix having a cavity or cavities corresponding to the required raised pattern. Then the sheet of polyvinyl chloride is placed on the martrix and is embossed in a vulcanizing press.
Practical experience with these applicators has shown that there is substantial difficulty in gluing them to rotary 3,529,336 Patented Sept. 22, 1970 gumming cylinders since no conventional adhesive will adhere to them. In accordance with the present invention this difficulty was solved by applying a piece of wax cloth or the like to the sheet of polyvinyl chloride as it is being placed on the matrix. This wax cloth consists of a cotton cloth one side of which is coated with polyacrylester or the like. The opposite uncoated side has the roughness of the cloth. This wax cloth is placed upon the sheet of polyvinyl chloride with the rough side facing the sheet. Then the sheet carrying the cloth is treated in the vulcanizing press and is removed with the matrix. After cooling, the applicator is pulled off the matrix.
The provision of the wax cloth makes it possible to glue the applicator upon the gumming cylinder. However, in many instances it is advisable to clamp the applicator to the cylinder instead of gluing it. In that case an ordinary cotton or linen cloth may be used the ends of which are extended beyond the applicator, a pair of clamps being used to hold the cloth. If the gumming cylinder has a flying axle so that it is open on one end, the ends of the cloth may be joined to form a sleeve which is then slid over the gumming cylinder and secured thereto by a clamp. In the machine the gumming cylinder is used in combination with an intermediate roller and and a roller dipping into a trough. The speeds of the rollers must be set to prevent latex from foaming in the through.
The invention will appear more clearly from the following detailed description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, showing by way of example, preferred embodiments of the inventive idea.
In the drawings:
FIG. 1 is a plan view of a profiled gum applicator.
FIG. 2 is a section along the line II-Il of FIG. l.`
FIG. 3 shows a flat bag provided with latex strips by means of the applicator of the present invention.
FIG. 4 is a side view of a gumming cylinder having two clamps for holding the applicator.
FIG. 5 is a side view of a gumming cylinder carrying a cloth upon which the applicator is fixed.
FIG. 6 shows in side view, partly in section, a mechanism for actuating the gumming cylinder.
FIG. 7 is a side view of a somewhat differently constructed actuating mechanism.
The proled gum applicator shown in FIGS. l and 2 consists of a strip 2 of polyvinyl chloride provided with raised gum-applying portions 1 and connected to a piece of cloth 3. If wax cloth is used, its cloth side is firmly attached to the applicator 2. The edges of the Wax cloth are usually trimmed to correspond to the edges 4 of the applicator 2.
If clamps are used to attach the applicator to the gumming cylinder, as will be described in detail hereinafter, the cloth may extend on opposite sides beyond the applicator, as shown in FIG. 1.
The raised gum-applying portions 1 of the applicator may be used for applying latex strips 1 upon a flat bag 5 shown in FIG. 3, so as t0 produce a so-called self-sealing closure.
Due to its low hardness of 20-25 Shore, the applicator of the present invention has the advantage that the thickness of the layer of latex applied over the bag 5 is substantially uniform even if the bag may have two layers of paper on one location and three layers of paper upon another location.
As already stated, the applicator may be glued to the cylinder. However, in the embodiment shown in FIG. 4, the applicator is attached to a gumming roller 6 by two clamps 7 and 8 consisting of elongated bodies fitting into a recess 10 provided in the roller 6 and firmly fixed thereto by screws 9. In this construction the cloth 3 extends beyond the applicator 2 and has ends fitting into the recess 10 and firmly held therein by the clamps 7 and 8.
This method of -tixing the applicator is used when' the shaft carrying the gumming roller has bearings at both ends.
However, if the shaft of the gumming roller is free upon one end, being connected to an arm of a flying axle, then the construction shown in FIG. 5 can be used, wherein the ends of the cloth 3 carrying the applicator 2 are joined to form a sleeve 11. The sleeve 11 is of such diameter that it can be conveniently slid over a gumming roller 12. Then a clamp 13 fitting into a recess of the roller 12 is used to secure the applicator firmly upon the gumming roller.
FIG. 6 shows the manner of actuating the gumming roller 14. In this construction the adhesive applicator 2 is secured to the roller or drum 14 by means of sticky tapes bearing adhesive on both sides. The adhesive sticks securely to the cylinder 14 and to the polyacrylester coating so that the applicator is firmly secured to the drum with the raised pattern 1 projecting radially outwards. The drum 14 is engaged by a driven roller 15 which in turn is engaged by a roller 16 which is partially submerged in a trough 17 of adhesive. Below the drum is a pressure roller 18 and there is a conveyor table 19, 20 on either side of the nip between the drum and the pressure roller.
In operation, the drum 14 rotates and a thin lm of adhesive is transferred from the trough 17 through the rollers 16 and 15 to the raised parts of the adhesive applicator which transfers it to articles, such as envelopes, passed between the drum 14 and the pressure roller 18.
The construction shown in FIG. 7 was found to be most convenient in actual practice. It includes a large trough 21 transmitting adhesive to a dip roller 22. The roller 22 meshes with an intermediate roller 23 which is coaxial with a roller 24 meshing with the gumming roller 25 coaxial with the dip roller 22. An advantage of this construction is that it is possible to keep the dip roller 22 at a low speed in order to prevent latex in the trough 21 from foaming. The circumferential speed of the intermediate roller 23 should be at least closely equal to the circumferential speed of the applicator.
It is apparent that the examples described above have been given solely by way of illustration and not by way of limitation and that they are capable of many variations and modifications within the scope of the present invention.
