A drier and preheater for cement raw materials being fed to a rotary furnace 1 comprises a vertical shaft 2, with a tangential inlet duct 7 for hot gases from the furnace, a distributing baffle 10 disposed below a solids feed pipe 9, and tangential offtakes 11 leading to cyclone separators 12 having valve-controlled pipes 14 feeding separated material back to the shaft. The charge material falls through the shaft in countercurrent to the upwardly swirling gases and is fed by a valve-controlled pipe 4 to the furnace.
