[Also in Division B8] A handrail for example for escalators or moving platforms comprises a main body part constructed of a flexible polymeric material, such as polyvinyl chloride, natural or synthetic rubber, polyvinyl chloride-nitrile mixtures or high styrene rubbers, the cross-section of the said part being in the form of a channel with externally rounded sides, and a metal reinforcement, for example, a metal tape, mesh material, or multiplicity of longitudinal wires, extending longitudinally along, and secured to, one side of the base of the channel and stopping short of the side walls of the channel. The reinforcement may be secured via a fabric interlayer which is attached to the metal by rubber. Fig. 2 shows a cross-section through a preferred construction, in which the main body 11 is of polyvinyl chloride, 12 is a flexible steel reinforcing tape. A strip of fabric 14 rubberised on one side is secured to the tape by rubber solution 17. A strip of fabric 15, rubberised on the inside, is attached to the other side of the metal tape. 16 is a wide strip of polyvinyl chloride. The layers may be secured by means of an adhesive such as rubber solution or polyvinyl chloride adhesive solution. There may be a V-shaped driving projection along the centre of the inner face of the channel.
