Abstract

1345321 Injection moulding handrails BTR INDUSTRIES Ltd 28 May 1971 [12 June 1970] 28634/70 Heading B5A [Also in Division B8] In an escalator or travolator, a moving handrail is retained on a fixed support 32 by interengaging guide means comprising (a) two flanges 28, 29, spaced from and attached to the underside of the handrail, and which together with the underside of the handrail define two opposed slots 30, 31; (b) on the fixed support two spaced apart rigid strips 32A, 32B each of which enters one of the slots respectively, the edge of each strip remote from the slot being attached to the support 32. The handrail comprises successive lengths of members carrying the flanges 28, 29. The members are of nylon and polyurethane and may be separated from each other, or they may be secured together by adhesive. They are moulded on to a continuous length or lengths of reinforcing material. There is provided a continuous C-cross-section covering of polyvinyl chloride, sulphonated polythene, polyurethane, natural vulcanizable rubber or polyvinyl chloride nitride rubber mixture. A space 27 in the moulding provides for the teeth (not shown) of a driving wheel. Each member is moulded on to the cords 25, 25, by an injection moulding process. Successive members may be welded together by the moulding process, or they may be secured by adhesive. In a modification (Figs. 1-3, not shown), the slots formed by the flanges 28, 29, open outwardly instead of inwardly. The cords may be of terylene, glass fibres or carbon fibres.
