955,439. Joint-making packing. W. R. GRACE & CO. March 20, 1962 [April 14, 1961 (2)], No. 10705/62. Heading F2B. [Also in Division B8] A gasket e.g. for a crown or screw cap comprises a foamed plastic disc 1 e.g. of foamed polystyrene, with an outer elastomeric coating 2 e.g. of puffed polyvinyl chloride; the disc is of greater rigidity than the coating and provides a support therefor, and when the cap 3 is pressed on to a bottle 4 the coating provides a seal whereas the disc is compressed more or less permanently to a thickness substantially the same as, or less than, that of the coating. Instead of a disc, the foamed plastic may be in the form of a ring to the outer circumference of which the elastomeric coating is applied. The gaskets may be cut from a pre-formed rod of foamed plastic coated with an elastomeric substance. The latter may be applied by dipping or by placing a preformed sleeve of elastomeric material over the rod. The rod may be extrusion moulded and then cut or ground to size; an adhesive coating may then be applied to which an elastomeric coating is applied by extrusion. The gasket of Fig. 7, for sealing a porthole in a vacuum chamber, comprises a supporting member 11 of foamed plastic to which are attached sealing elements 12. The member 11 is more rigid than that of the elements 12 and serves to retain the shape of the gasket during its handling. It has bolt holes 13 and may be sliced from a block of foamed plastic which has been cut to the desired shape, drilled, and dipped into rubber latex.
