Abstract

955,356. Semi-conductor switching circuits. DECCA Ltd. Nov. 28, 1962 [Dec. 13, 1961], No. 44575/61. Heading H3T. [Also in Division G4] Apparatus for mounting a fluorescent lamp (see Division G4) comprises a transistor 23, normally biased to be conducting, to the base of which is applied a direct voltage derived from rectifying the alternating voltage produced in an auxiliary winding 20 on transformer 13. When the lamp 10 is struck, the voltage on winding 20 is insufficient to overcome the bias applied by Zener diode 28, and diode 21 is non- conducting so that transistor 23 is forward biased. If lamp 10 is not struck, the voltage on winding 20 is insufficient to overcome the bias of the Zener diode and transistor 23 is cut off. In an alternative embodiment, Fig. 2 (not shown), the auxiliary winding is on the ballast choke 14 and the voltage developed is rectified and used to forward or reverse bias a diode in the transistor base circuit.
