Abstract
954, 583. Forwarding filamentary strands. OWENS CORNING FIBERGLAS CORPORATION. July 6, 1961 [July 11, 1960], No. 24541/61. Heading D1D. Apparatus for feeding and/or attenuating a continuous multi-filament strand, comprises a hollow pulling wheel 16, Fig. 3 having circumferentially-spaced elements 38 forming an interrupted peripheral surface, means for rotating the wheel at high speed about its central axis 18, a spider wheel 20 mounted to rotate about an axis 33 parallel to and eccentric with regard to axis 18 and including spaced members 37 on its pheriphery, at least one of which inter-digitates with and protrudes beyond adjacent circumferentially spaced elements, and means independent of the inter-digitating means within the wheel 16 for positively driving the wheel 20 from the wheel 16. Shaft 18 is driven by a motor 19, Fig. 2, and the wheel 16 has a ring 30 with a flange 31 co-operating with a circumferential lip 32 of a fixed cover-plate 27. This arrangement prevents air and foreign matter entering the interior of the wheel, and consequently the egress of air through the spaces at 38 which would tend to lift the strand off the wheel. The spider-wheel is mounted on a shaft 33 secured to plate 27 and the members 37 are in the form of spokes secured by rings 39 received in recesses in both the rings and the members. In other forms,the spider-wheel is driven from shaft 18 by a timing-belt and sprockets or by a ring-gear on the inside of the wheel 16 meshing with a gear on the shaft of the spider-wheel. The apparatus may be used to attenuate glass fibres 10, Fig. 1, which are passed through a liquid applicator 14, gathered together at 13 and passed around the periphery of the wheel 16 by a guide 15, so that the spokes 37 engage and detach the strand at a point diametrically opposite the point where the strand engages the wheel.
