408,685. Winding yarns and threads. BRITISH CELANESE, Ltd., 22, Hanover Square, London, KINSELLA, E., and TAYLOR, W. I., c /o British Celanese, Spondon, near Derby. Oct. 15, 1932, No. 28840. [Class 120 (ii).] In winding cross-wound packages the package is supported between a driving-drum and a traverse-drum and the ratio of the speeds of the drums is varied during the formation of the package to prevent ribbon winding. Preferably the driving-drum is rotated at a constant speed, and the drums are arranged so that the greater part of the weight of the package is carried by the driving-drum, and so that, as the size of the package increases, its weight is disposed more nearly vertically upon the driving-drum, the nipping effect between the drums being thereby reduced relatively to the weight of the package and the reaction between the package and driving-drum maintained substantially constant. The invention is particularly applicable to the winding of artificial yarns continuously with their production as described in Specification 384,997. As shown, yarn packages 22, 23 are supported by driving-drums 20, 21 and grooved traverse-drums 18, 19. The driving- drums are driven by sprockets 36, 37 from the main sprocket 28, and the traverse-drums by sprockets 29, 31. The sprocket 29 is connected by means of a crank 43 with the main sprocket 28 and the crank is operated by worm gear 47 so that the speed of the sprocket 29 and of the driving-drums is varied. The packages are carried by links 26 and the shafts 38, 39 of the driving-drums are arranged slightly lower than the shafts 30, 32 of the traverse-drum so that the greater part of the weight of the carriage is taken by the driving-rollers. The Provisional Specification describes also an arrangement wherein the traverse-drum is driven from the package.
