Abstract

A method of indicating whether a required transistion from the gamma form to the alpha form of an alumina material has taken place comprises adding up to 20 molecular percentage of chromic oxide to form a solid solution such that on subsequent heat treatment the mixture has a first colour (pink) when in the alpha form and another colour (green) when in the gamma form. Preferably the chromic oxide is added by mixing in powder form alumina and chromic oxide, the mixture is then fired above 1200 DEG C. to produce a solid solution which is then powdered and a refractory body is formed by flame spraying the powdered material in the form of molten particles on to a base or former and this body is pink when the alumina is in the alpha form and green when in the gamma form. Specification 903,709 is referred to.ALSO:A composite pigment comprising alumina and up to 20 molecular percentage of chromic oxide is prepared by forming a solid solution of the alumina and chromic oxide such that on subsequent heat treatment the mixture has a first colour when the alumina is in the alpha form and a second colour when it is in the gamma form. Preferably the chromic oxide is added by mixing in powder form alumina and chromic oxide, the mixture is then fired above 1200 DEG C. to produce a solid solution which is then powdered and a refractory body is formed by flame spraying the powdered material, in the form of molten particles, on to a base or former and this body is pink when the alumina is in the alpha form and green when in the gamma form. Specification 903,709 is referred to.ALSO:A refractory body is formed by flame-spraying on to a base or former a solid solution which has been formed by adding up to 20 molecules percentage of chromic oxide to an alumina material, the solid solution on subsequent heat treatment having a first colour, pink, when the alumina is in the alpha form and a second colour, green, when the alumina is in the gamma form. Preferably the chromic oxide is added by mixing in powder form alumina and chromic oxide, then firing the mixture above 1200 DEG C. to produce a solid solution which is then powdered and the refractory body is then formed by flame spraying the powdered material in the form of molten particles on to a base or former.
