Abstract

676,586. Refractory composition. ELECTRO REFRACTAIRE. Aug. 10, 1950 [Aug. 11, 1949; July 24, 1950], No. 19963/50. Class 22 Cast refractories containing predetermined proportions of zirconia and silica together with one or more other oxides e.g. alumina are prepared from materials containing such constituents but wherein the amount of silica in the product would be too great by mixing the materials in such proportion to give the desired amount of zirconia and reducing the excess silica into silicon during fusion whereat the silicon is votatilized off. The reducing agent may be aluminium and/or carbon. The zirconia and silica may be introduced into the mixture together e.g. by using zircon or a mixture of zircon and zirkite. Oxides of iron and titanium may also be present.
