Apparatus for transferring a wheeled vehicle A between two fixed locations is characterized by its means for engaging the vehicle to be moved, the said means comprising a pair of shoes 4, 5, one of which (4) is directly mounted on a carriage 6 and the other (5) on a member rectilinearly slidable on the carriage 6 so that shoe 5 may be moved toward shoe 4 to secure and slightly raise a single vehicle wheel 3. Each shoe is pivotally mounted on an axle 25 or 26 which in turn is pivotable about a perpendicular axle 4a or 5a, respectively, and the shoes preferably are supported by rollers 4b, 5b, respectively. The complete apparatus includes means for moving the carriage 6 along a beam 7 and for moving the beam 7 along a fixed girder 8. The latter may also be laterally movable along transverse supports 9. To move vehicle A longitudinally of the apparatus a chain 10, driven by sprocket 11 and secured at both ends to carriage 6, is arranged to produce the necessary movements of beam 7, carriage 6 and shoe 5. Fig. 3 shows the beam 7 secured against movement by a stop device 16 and the carriage moving to the right along the beam, hauled by the end b of chain 10. When a stop 6a on the carriage strikes a stop 7a near the end of the beam, this rightward movement is halted and a lever 19, struck at the same time, releasesthrough rod 40-the device 16 and also operates a switch 23 which reverses the chain's drive so that the movement-which is now of the beam 7 itself-will continue to be to the right. The grip of the shoes 4, 5 on the wheel is controlled by altering the effective length of the chain through the operation of cylinder 30, Fig. 9. This produces a movement of support member 24 which carries shoe 5 with respect to the carriage 6.
