Abstract
953,324. Making gate posts; bending; winding; twisting. I. SCOTT. July 14, 1960 [July 31, 1959; Sept. 9, 1959; Nov. 23, 1959], Nos. 26362/59, 30798/59 and 39651/59. Headings B3A and B3E. A machine for shaping strip sheet or bar metal stock comprises a base support to which is secured a rear support, a front support associated with the base support on guide members adapted to allow the front support to be easily removed or separated from the base support, and a forming tool locatable between the front and rear supports and adapted to be rotated by a driving source and to engage one or more pieces of metal to be shaped by forming around said tool. Three metal strips, guided over a roller 13 adjustable along front and rear support plates 5 and 2, are gripped at one end in a longitudinal slot 11 in a forming tool 10 having a driving shaft 9 received in the plates 5 and 2. The shaft 9 is rotated, through gearing, by a motor 20 or by hand. The former 10 may be made from metal tubing or a piece of metal machined to spiral cross-section. The former 10 may be rotated one or more than one revolution, in which latter case a plurality of convolutions are wound which may later be separated. To remove the bent strips the front support plate 5 is slid off guides 3, secured to the rear support plate 2, away from a base-plate 1. Alternatively the former 10 may terminate at 10a a short distance behind the plate 5 so that bent strips may be passed over the shaft 9. A modified former, Fig. 2, includes a first section comprising a part tubular member 32 with its mouth closed by angle iron 34 welded thereto, a second length of angle iron welded at one lip of the mouth to define an opening 39 into which the end of the workpiece 40 can be received, and a catch piece 42 provided on the other lip of the mouth. A second section comprises a part tubular member 43 with a projection 41 on one lip engaging the catch piece 42 and an angle iron 47 on the other lip to locate a third part tubular section 48. Distance-pieces 49 are provided. In another modification, Fig. 3, the former comprises a sheet-metal jacket 50 with end-plates 51, 52 welded thereto and carrying shafts 54, 55. The edges of the jacket 50 define a slot 53 and the plate 51 and shaft 54 are diametrically slotted. The former could be built from two L-sectioned angle strips. The former could be used to produce triangular sectioned members. The former may have a hexagonal, octagonal or other polygonal section. A hollow member made in the apparatus may be longitudinally welded and cupped at one or both ends to form a gatepost to which gate supporting brackets are welded. To twist a bar 61, Fig. 4, in the apparatus one end of the bar is held in a socket 59 on sleeve 58 carried by an extension 8 of the front plate 5 and the other end is inserted in an aperture 28 in the final gear 27 of the drive.
