Abstract

561,003. Angular bending. PARKER, A. LA R. Nov. 26, 1942, No. 16780. [Class 83 (iv)] A power-operated tube-bending machine has power-operated means for feeding the tube, after a bend has been made, so that another bend can be made therein. Assuming that the bending-former 1 has been returned to its initial position by the spring 47, that the guide 17 and clamp 13 are withdrawn, and that the tube-feeding carriage 21 is adjacent the former 1, the tube 12 to be bent is inserted, from the right, over a mandrel 28 and through the clamp, guide, and carriage to abut an adjustable stop 27. The wheel 26 is then turned to clamp the tube 12 to the carriage. The push button 48, Fig. 5, is then closed to complete a circuit from the power line L<1> through a switch 49, line 50, solenoid 51, and switch 53 to L<3>. This will close the switch 52 to start the motor 38 which will act through belts 39, 43 and screw 22 to move the carriage to the left until it engages the switch 53, Fig. 1, to break the circuit through the motor 38 and close a circuit through solenoids 15, 19 thus stopping the carriage 21, closing the clamp 13, and correctly positioning the guide 17. This is attached to, and moves into the position shown, the switch 49 which closes a circuit through a solenoid 10 thus closing a clutch 8 and switch 55 and causing a continually rotating motor 3 to rotate the former 1 and effect the bend and the circuits through the solenoids 15, 19 to be maintained when the switch 53 is released. During the bending operation the carriage 21 is advanced at the correct rate by variable speed friction gear 44, Fig. 4. When the advancing carriage engages a switch 54, Figs. 1 and 5, the circuit through the solenoid 10 is broken, thus retracting the clutch 8, clamp 13, and guide 17, and a circuit through a solenoid 57 and switch 59 is closed, thus closing a switch 58 and starting the motor 38 to advance the carriage and tube. When this reaches the desired position for the next bend, the carriage engages the switch 59 to break the circuit through the solenoid 57 thus stopping the carriage and closing a circuit through a solenoid 61 and switch 65 thus closing a switch 62 and causing a motor 37, Fig. 2, to act, through' gearing 36, 35, shaft 33 and chain 31, to rotate the tube clamp 24 until an arm 63 or 64, Fig. 1, thereon engages a switch 65 to break the circuit through the solenoid 61, thus stopping the motor 37, and close a circuit through the solenoids 15, 19 thus re-starting the cycle of operations. Any number of the switches 54, 59, 65 may be arranged in adjusted positions along the supports 46, 66 to form the desired bends. In Fig. 5 four of each of such switches are shown.
