Abstract
895,944. Making helically-seamed tubing. HOESCH A.G. Jan. 23, 1961 [Feb. 27, 1960], No. 2631/61. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). A machine for making helically-welded tubes from strip material having a welding device arranged after a bending apparatus by which the strip, which is fed at an acute angle to the axis of the tube being formed, is wound into tubular form, is characterized in that the bending apparatus consists of a rotatable mandrel which is coupled to driving means and of which the outer surface comprises a number of convex rollers, the axes of which are all tangent to a circular cylinder concentric to the axis of the mandrel and are at right-angles to the generatrix of the cylinder. Strip 21 is fed initially from a coil 20 by rollers 22, 23 driven until the strip is fed by a driven mandrel 12. The strip passes to the mandrel 12 between guide rollers 27 bearing laterally against its edges and between upper and lower rails. The strip is urged on to the mandrel by rollers 33, 38 and is arc-welded at its edges at 39. The various feed means are adjustable angularly to alter the angle at which the strip is fed. The surface of the mandrel 12 comprises a series of freely rotatable convex rollers 29, the axes 30 of which are all tangents to a circular cylinder 31 concentric to the axis of the mandrel so that no resistance is offered to movement of the strip parallel to the mandrel axis.
