Abstract
971,151. Making helically seamed tubing. W. RICHARDSON & CO. Ltd. Nov.25, 1960 [Nov. 27, 1959; Feb. 20, 1960], Nos. 40390/59 and 6048/60. Headings B3A and B3E. Strip is coiled into tubular form by being fed against a member presenting only line contact with the strip and set at an angle across the direction of movement of the strip. Steel strip S is fed between upper and lower guides 12, 13, comprised of series of parallel bars, against a die-plate 10 by which the strip is deflected into helical form. The guide 12 may have or be replaced by rollers 19 and the guide 13 may be dispensed with. The die-plate 10 is adjustable angularly about its lower edge 15, the position of the guides 12, 13 being simultaneously adjusted. The die-plate 10 is also adjustable about a vertical axis on a turntable 11 and could also or instead be adjustable linearly in the direction Z. The die-plate may be faced with wood. One or more sizing rollers 18 may be provided mounted in adjustable frames or in the form of a chain around the formed strip. A further die or guide plate may be provided, set vertically and located above the plate 10, which is shortened, to be tangential to the coiled strip. The strip S may be guided at its edges, as it passes between the guides 12, 13, by rollers, those along one edge bing spring loaded. The abutting edges of the formed strip may be welded together. A tapered tube may be formed by moving the plate 10 during coiling.
