Abstract
The corrosive properties towards zinc of degreasing compositions comprising (a) trichlorethylene or methyl chloroform which contains as a stabilizer (b) an organic nitrogen base or a quaternary ammonium compound, generally in an amount of 0.0005-0.3% by weight, are reduced by the inclusion of (c) a corrosion inhibiting amount, preferably 0.001-0.1% by weight, of carbon disulphide. (b) may comprise such amines as the pyridines, pyrroles or piperidines, propylamine, butylamine, triethylamine, diisopropylamine, aniline, dimethylaniline and N-alkyl morpholines, or quaternary ammonium compounds of general formula N+R4X- wherein the R groups, which are not necessarily all the same, may be alkyl, alkenyl or aromatic groups, and two or more of the R substituents may, with the N atom, form a cyclic group, and X may be hydroxyl, chloride, bromide, acetate, nitrate or sulphate, e.g. cetyl-trimethylammonium bromide, cetyl pyridinium bromide, or benzyltrimethylammonium salts.
