Abstract
Corrosion of metals by acidic crude petroleum with a pH value between 2 to 5 is inhibited by the addition of from one part per million to one part per hundred by weight of a quaternary ammonium halide of the general formula <FORM:0798620/III/1> wherein R1, R2, R3 and R4 are organi radicals containing 1 to 22 carbon atoms per radical, and which may be aliphatic, cyclic or aromatic hydrocarbons or heterocyclic organic compounds containing carbon, oxygen and/or nitrogen atoms, and X is a halogen atom. Examples give lauryl dimethyl benzyl ammonium chloride or distearyl dimethyl ammonium chloride as additives which may be dissolved in an aqueous or an organic solvent and either added to the crude petroleum or injected into the vaporized fractions in a distillation column.
