Abstract

953,233. Shearing. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. July 3, 1962, [July 10, 1961], No. 24834/61. Heading B3W. [Also in Division G6] A cable cutter for cutting the thermocouple leads of reactor fuel elements comprises an elongated body having a longitudinal aperture therethrough, remotely controlled cutting means at one end of the aperture, clamping means for the cable and support means for the body at the end remote from the cutting means. The cutter body 1 has a central bore 3 and a longitudinal aperture 2. Within the bore 3 is a ram 10, one end of which carries seals 16 and operates in a counterbore 6. Pneumatic pressure can be applied to the chamber on either side of the seals. The other end of the ram has a forked end 17 and a cam slot 18 in which runs a pin 22 which also passes through a lever 20. The lever pivots about a pin 21 and has a tip 26 which co-operates with a member 28 to shear a cable within the aperture 2. An inclined face 19 on the ram engages a ball 37 and a plunger 36 and clamps the cable while it is being cut. At the forward end of the body are two lobes 33 which engage a transverse arm of the fuel element end fitting and correctly orientate the cutter with respect to the element. A duct 52 in the body is connected to a source of pneumatic pressure and leads to a bore 44 in which slides a plunger 45 having a waisted portion 49. The cutter is threaded on to the thermocouple cable and lowered on to the fuel element with pressure applied to the duct 52 and to the chamber 42 on the forward side of the seals 16. When the end 47 of the plunger 45 abuts the fuel element it is pushed inwardly against a spring 48 and connects the duct 52 to the aperture 50. The resultant drop in gas pressure is indicated by a gauge at the charge face and indicates that the device is correctly located. Gas pressure is admitted to the chamber 39 and operates the cutter. Specification 953,232 is referred to.
