Abstract

1456877 Pipe branches S R V GEBELIUS 9 Sept 1974 [10 Sept 1973] 39210/74 Heading F2G A device for forming a junction in a pipe comprises a connector body split longitudinally into two parts which are bolted together around pipe 10 making fluid-tight contact therewith, a guide channel 13 extending through the larger part of the connector body, a tubular guiding member 14 secured into the channel 13, a piercing tool 15 slidable in the channel 13 and a flow channel 19 extending from the inner end of the channel 13 to the exterior surface of the body and an explosive cartridge 27 disposed within a further channel 26 in the member 14 and arranged on detonation, by striking a firing pin 30, to move the tool 15 and cause its cutting face 15<SP>1</SP> to pierce a hole 17 in the pipe 10 and establish communication with the flow channel 19. When the hole 17 has been pierced a cap 29 retaining the cartridge 27 is removed and an adjusting member (not shown) with a screw threaded spindle is attached to the grinding member. This is arranged to contact the piercing tool 15 so that it can be adjusted in position in the channel 13 and against the action of a spring 24 to control flow through the flow channel 19. In an alternative embodiment, the adjusting member is present at the outset and the explosive cartridge is located in a side channel off the channel 13. The guide channel may, if desired, extend at an acute angle to the pipe 10.
