In a retractable ball-point pen, wherein the cartridge 31 is biased in the retracted position by a restoring spring (not illustrated), a push button 19 has cam surfaces 21, 22, 23 and 34, and radial lugs 24, Fig. 2. A drum 10, integral with the barrel of the pen has cam surfaces 13-17 with slots 12, Fig. 1. Lugs 24 run in the slots 12, preventing relative rotation between the drum 10 and the push button 19. A turn button 27 which receives the cartridge 31 against a rear transverse wall 28 has radial ears 29, each with a bevelled top surface 30 as shown in Fig. 8, or alternatively a rounded or pointed surface (not illustrated). A spring 32 biases the push button 19 away from the turn button 27. From the retracted position, Fig. 8, the push button is depressed, transferring the radial ears 29 from the push button cam surface 21 to the drum cam surface 13 with a small rotation of the turn button. The cartridge is then in the projected writing position. Further depression of the push button releases the ears 29 from cam surfaces 13, and the turn button returns to the retracted position of Fig. 8. The complete operation of projection and retraction is shown in Fig. 8 and Figs. 9-14 (not shown).
