Abstract

953,042. Carriage control of calculating machines. WALTHER BUROMASCHINEN G. m. b. H. Jan. 8,1963 [Jan. 11, 1962], No. 919/ 63. Heading G4B. A drum 3 which drives the paper carriage through a rack and pinion arrangement carries a set of similarly shaped stops 11 which may each be keyset to a position in which they project axially of the drum. Different combinations of set stops define different functions to be performed by the calculating machine. As shown in Fig. 4 the stops 11 are located by springs 13,14 engaging notches on the stops. The stop shown in plan to the right is in set position. A stop slide 25 is spring connected to a function sensing lever 16 (Fig. 1), the spring holding one limb of a bell crank 21, along the other limb of which slide 25 moves, against a lug 24 on the function sensing lever. When the slide senses a set stop bell crank 21 is pulled clockwise by the drum motion so that a pin 30 on the slide engages a notch 35 in a bell crank 36 and drum and paper carriage are stopped. The motion of the bell crank 21 disengages tail 23 from lug 24 so that the function sensing lever is released to spring 31 to sense by means of steps 38 to 41 the positions of four adjacent stops as seen from the other side of the drum. Depending on which of the four stops following the tabulation stop have been set, the anticlockwise movement of the sensing is limited to four distances. A lever 44 resting in a cutaway portion 47 of the sensing lever is correspondingly moved and rocks a bell crank 50 (Fig. 5) and through a link 53 a bell crank 57. The latter carries a pin 60 which bears on a pair of limbs depending from yokes 61, 62. The yokes control the movement of catches 64, 65 which have tails contacting a pair of control pawls 75, 76 connected with the key shanks 82. Different movements of pin 60 thus selectively actuate the pawls 75, 76. A second totalizer is selected on maximum movement of lever 44. In such a case bell crank 99 is rocked to actuate cam-lever 102, the lost motion of link 54 due to slot 97 having been overcome. The operation set on the stop drum may be replaced by a key-selected operation. Depression of the key, through a forward arm 81 on the keyshank, disconnects the catches 64, 65 from the yokes.
