Abstract

<PICT:0952742/C3/1> Structural panels are made by introducing foamable polystyrene or other plastics beads between two travelling support webs and foaming the beads by introducing a heating medium between the webs. The heating medium may be steam or hot air. The support webs may be coated with a parting composition and separated from the foamed material which then itself constitutes the panel. As shown, a pair of rubber or like endless belts 40, 41, are carried over pulleys 49, 51 between a pair of chain conveyers 102, 103 which pass around sprockets 21, 22. The belts 40, 41 carry adhesive coated paper webs 100, 101, into the space 300 between which partially foamed polystyrene foamable beads are introduced through a flat delivery nozzle 67. The foaming of the beads is completed by dry steam introduced from a manifold 90 through a row of fine lances 92, and the foamed material is consolidated in the space 105 by the pressure of the slat elements of the conveyers. The space 105 is closed at the sides by angle pieces of plastics material secured to the ends of the slats. The upper conveyer 102 is vertically adjustable, by screws on the frame of the apparatus, to adjust the space 105 to give the product the required thickness.
