854,478. Moulding expanded thermoplastic materials. WMB INTERNATIONAL A.B. Jan. 31, 1957 [Feb. 3, 1956], No. 3395/57. Class 87(2). Pre-expanded granules of a synthetic thermoplastic material, e.g. polystyrene, are formed into coherent bodies by feeding them by means of a series of parallel screw conveyers 71 from a hopper 70 into one end of an elongated channel 56 of which at least two of the walls are formed by driven endless belts 20, 22, the belts being perforated to enable heated gas to be injected through the granules in a heating zone of the channel whereby the granules expand further and become pressed together to form a coherent body and themselves counteract motion in a direction opposite to the direction of feed, finally gradually cooling the coherent body. The heating zone comprises boxes 78 into which steam supply tubes 80 open and the cooling zone boxes 82, a cooling agent, e.g. air being introduced into one end through socket 84 and escaping through socket 86. The length of the cooling zone considerably exceeds that of the heating zone. The belts 20, 22 are backed by rollers 46. The side walls of the channel 56 may also be formed by endless belts, which may be as long as or shorter than the belts 20, 22. The tension of the belts may be adjusted by moving the drums 12, 16 by pneumatic devices such as 50 and the belt 20 may be raised or lowered to vary the depth of the channel 56.
